Sometimes photography becomes so focused on getting the shot that we forget to enjoy the experience of being there.

And sometimes we find ourselves photographing the same kinds of things, in the same familiar ways, wondering where our inspiration went.

What if you approached it a little differently?

What if, instead of immediately looking for something to photograph, you spent a few moments noticing what's around you?

The light. The textures. The movement. The things you've passed a hundred times without really seeing.

And then picked up your camera.

A proposed 6 × 9-inch, coil-bound journal featuring guided winter Nature photography experiences and space for reflection.

Proposed price: $29.99 plus shipping, starting at $5.69 in the United States.

Currently in development. Interested in a copy? Explore the sample below and let me know.

A different way to enjoy winter photography

Nature Photography Journal — Winter Edition is a guided collection of outdoor photography experiences designed to help you slow down, find inspiration, and explore the winter world with fresh eyes.

Winter offers plenty to discover, whether you live somewhere blanketed in snow or somewhere the season reveals itself in subtler ways.

Each experience offers a fresh photography invitation, encouraging you to explore something in Nature, notice details you might otherwise overlook, and create photographs that express what caught your attention.

There's no need for expensive equipment or perfectly composed images.

Bring your camera or phone, your curiosity, and a willingness to see what happens.

How it works

1. Spend time in Nature

Follow a gentle invitation to explore something in the winter landscape. You might return to a familiar place, notice the patterns of bare branches, or discover something surprising in an ordinary scene.

2. Explore through photography

Each experience gives you a creative starting point for your photography. Rather than prescribing a particular setup or technique, the invitations encourage you to experiment with what catches your attention and find your own way of expressing it through an image.

3. Record your experience

Use the journal pages to write about what you noticed, how you felt, what surprised you, or anything else you want to remember.

There's no right answer and no specific discovery you're supposed to make.

Sample experience: A Familiar Place in Winter

What happens when you revisit a place you love during a different season?

One of the guided photography experiences invites you to explore a familiar outdoor setting in winter, notice what catches your attention, and use your camera to share something of its story.

The above pages show an example of the creative invitations and reflection space envisioned for the journal.

A journal for every season?

The Winter Edition is envisioned as the first in a possible collection of four seasonal Nature photography journals, each offering guided experiences inspired by the changing world around us.

Future editions are not yet scheduled or guaranteed.

Created by Sarah Woodard, author and Nature photographer.

Photography is one of the ways I explore and connect with the natural world. I created this journal concept to share a different way of approaching photography—one where the experience matters just as much as the image.
